MJMK was founded by Jake Kasumov and Marco Mendes. Following corporate careers, the duo chose to pursue their passions, initially for music, creating Boneca – now one of London’s largest and most well-attended electronic music events – and then for food. In 2018, they launched the first Casa do Frango in London Bridge. Taking inspiration from Marco’s southern Portuguese upbringing, Casa do Frango celebrates Algarvian cuisine and culture. This was followed by Casa do Frango Shoreditch in 2019, a larger site including an outdoor terrace. Both restaurants are now critically acclaimed for their Piri-Piri chicken and authentic Portuguese fare.
In 2020, amidst the global pandemic and after nearly 3 years of development with Mexican Chef Patron, Santiago Lastra, MJMK opened KOL restaurant in Marylebone, accompanied by KOL Mezcaleria in May 2021. In just a few short months, KOL has been recognised internationally as one of London’s best restaurants, receiving accolades from La Liste, the National Restaurant Awards and GQ.
Alongside the restaurants, MJMK also own and operate a growing bar division, including Vinegar Yard in London Bridge, and the recently launched Bar La Rampa in Oxford Circus. The latter is inspired by Jake’s childhood in Cuba and celebrates the cultural heritage and rich cocktail culture of Cuba through the decadence and beauty of 1950’s Havana.
Ambitious future plans will see the MJMK group expand their reach across London in the next 18 months and beyond. The business seeks to celebrate culture and heritage, great food and drink, and authentic atmospheres. Each site and concept is inspired either by Jake and Marco’s personal backgrounds, or by those of the partners they work with.
